Personal Development is a Load of Rubbish.
I wish I had known about personal development long before I did. I think of the heartache and stress I may have been able to navigate better in my younger years. I’m so passionate about continuing to develop myself now but frequently sense the roll of eyes, usually from the older generation, or the kids when I mention a new tool or thing I’ve learned.
I wonder why this is the case. Why are people so disparaging of improving how you think and how you show up in the world? Why is it almost seen as a personality flaw to get help on how you think about yourself and the world, yet everyone accepts that to be a top athlete, you need a coach. In every other area of life, we are expected to struggle on our own, only listening and confiding in close friends and family, who, let’s face it, are no better off or more enlightened than we are.
When we dig into why this might be, I wonder if it’s because people are afraid of what they might find, or they are afraid of having to change themselves and perhaps they think personal change is impossible.
What to do when the worst happens?
I also wonder why people wait until the worst possible times are happening to them before they invest in this sort of work.
I was one of them. I didn’t have any idea about personal development until I had postnatal depression and life was just too hard. I had to do something about it, or I was at risk of not being there for my daughter. I fought so hard to get better but all I was offered was CBT (which made things worse) and medication.
It was only when I was having my second child that I dipped my toe into new ways of doing things. I found a hypnotherapist with the sole aim of having a better birth experience the second time around. That changed my whole life.
I shifted from being an incredibly scared, negative person to someone who could always see the potential. I was no longer looking for the tiger around every corner, and even though life stresses were to knock me back again, I held a new belief that there was a different way, and I could find it.
My forms of personal development have ranged from NLP, Hypnotherapy, Reiki, EFT, Coaching, Psychotherapy and most recently, Constellation Therapy. I have trained in all but hypnotherapy due to the amazing impact they have had on my life.
I’m not the same person I was 20 years ago as a young, about to be married 24-year-old. It’s almost impossible to stay the same, but the work I have done has helped me change the whole way I think about the world, myself, business. I’m always curious, always willing to accept new ways, and I don’t plan on being the same person in 6 months as I am today.
If you are not willing to look at yourself, change and grow, I would be interested to know why. Do you just think you are perfect as you are so there is no growth and change to do? Or are you scared of what you might uncover? Or do you have every book on the shelf, but you have yet to finish one, still believing you can do it yourself?
I promise, there is nothing worse than staying stuck being afraid of who you are, and who you could be and feeling like a failure because doing the work on your own is just too hard.
Why bother with Personal Development and Brand?
One of the reasons we have combined brand strategy with coaching is because we believe business development goes hand in hand with personal development. Changing your business without changing yourself is like working on changing your body shape and not bothering to buy new clothes that enhance and improve your look.
Some of the issues we have come across when working with clients on their brand are:
Fear of being an employer.
Fear of being different.
Fear of standing out.
Fear of success.
Fear of failure.
Fear of change.
Fear of vulnerability.
Not really knowing their values and how they may conflict with the business values.
Money Mindset issues.
Overwhelm.
Confusion about the business direction.
Confusion about the target audience.
Lack of confidence.
Neurodiversity challenges.
Hating social media and being visible as the company owner.
Spending so much money on the physical accoutrements of business that there is no money for strategy.
Family negativity holding them back.
Not understanding what the next 10 years looks like, and definitely no idea how to get there.
Not enough time to look after the family commitments, personal commitments and business.
Persistent ill health.
Belief that they need to do what others in their industry are doing, but it’s not working.
Fallen out of love with the business.
All of these can be tackled with coaching, NLP, Constellation Therapy and mentoring which is why we decided to provide it all together because we want the best for our clients.
Because we recognise that brand is not just about visuals. It’s about what’s inside, how you project that outside, and how that makes your audience connect with you and your business.
